Life Stories
When talking about possible beneficiaries, along with other possibilities, World Vision came up, and when she heard how World Vision took care of business, she was excited. "Because of World Vision's philosophy of staying in a country and working side by side with local people until a whole community is a complete one with clean water, health, education and income producing improvements, and for many other reasons, I chose World Vision for 100% of my trust fund. Not only are they excellent and responsible money managers, but they are doing so much good work for children, single mothers, and families all over the world. This was a great fit for my values and goals. I've seen a great deal of poverty around the world, which gives me a strong sense of how public contributions should be put to the most fruitful use. I believe World Vision has that strong sense, too!" Donor Advised Fund - Convenient & Professional Jim Knapp was already an avid supporter of the many good works World Vision carries out around the world. When he learned about Donor Advised Funds (DAF), he knew it was the right way for him to meet his philanthropic goals. With an initial gift, Jim established his DAF account and received an immediate tax deduction. He can request specific grant distributions from his account to World Vision and other charities. For Jim, the benefits of the DAF go beyond tax deductions. He cites both convenience and professionalism. "Yes, it's convenient-they take care of everything and make it so easy," he says. "But I cannot emphasize enough how professionally managed the fund is." Jim established his account to carry on throughout his daughter's lifetime. When the time comes for the term of his account to end, World Vision communities will benefit from the remaining balance. In the meantime, a minimum of 10 percent of his account principal and income are furthering the World Vision projects of his choice. Charitable Gift Annuities - Help the Needy & Yourself, Too! It was shortly after the end of World War II that Gwen Bradley attended a church meeting in Everett, Washington and first heard of World Vision. A man named Bob Pierce-our founder-was speaking that night, sharing about the terrible plight of Korean children. And Gwen has been a World Vision sponsor ever since. In 1986, Gwen discovered Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs), another effective way to help the needy-and herself, too. Since then, the retired educator of 47 years has established several CGAs, and in exchange she receives a fixed annual income. This income is paid quarterly, and she will receive it for the rest of her life. In addition to relatively high interest rates, Gwen enjoys several other benefits, including an income tax deduction, a guarantee on her income payments, and peace of mind. "I don't have to worry about anything," she says. "World Vision does that for me." But for Gwen, perhaps the most important benefit is the satisfaction of knowing she is helping to do ministry. "Sure, it's a sound investment," she says. "But it's being used for the Lord's work. And that's the most important thing."
