John recalls watching television one night in 1985, as news broke of a devastating famine. It was Ethiopia, and millions were going hungry.

Newly married, John and his wife, Pat, knew they couldn't just sit there and watch. "Instantly it became a priority," he says. "We saw an ongoing need, and we believed in what World Vision was doing."

Over time, what started as a one-time gift became a monthly donation. Then John began sponsoring six children. "It was a great way to take a more hands-on approach," he says.

Tragically, Pat passed away a few years ago. But her legacy of giving continues to thrive. Shortly after losing his wife, John decided the time had come to create a will. "I realized it was important, so I sat down and figured out what my priorities were."

One of those priorities is helping children who are trapped in poverty. "There is such a disparity of needs out there," he says. "I included World Vision in my will because I can't imagine a better partner to invest in the good of the world."

Now John is in the process of making World Vision a beneficiary on his retirement accounts as well. "Nothing feels better than when you get up in the morning and know you're doing good.

"The people of World Vision are the hands and feet of what I want to accomplish."
